Renowned Gospel music icon, Ron Kenoly, dies at 81

Celebrated American gospel singer, worship leader, and pastor Ron Kenoly has died at the age of 81. The announcement was first made by his long-time music director on social media, sparking widespread reactions. Prominent evangelist Bishop Francis Wale Oke also confirmed the news on his Facebook page

A man of humility, a vessel of grace, and a true worshipper who gave his life to the glory of God.

Ron Kenoly walked in profound spiritual depth, filled with the Holy Spirit, sound in the Scriptures, and deeply moving in both word and song. He carried the presence of God wherever he ministered, lifting hearts and nations into the atmosphere of worship and reverence. It was our privilege to host him on multiple occasions in Nigeria and internationally, where he poured out his heart in service to God and the Body of Christ.

Though our hearts are heavy, we submit to the perfect will of God, taking comfort in the blessed assurance that a life spent in faithful devotion is never in vain. His Spirit-filled songs, his legacy, and his impact will continue to speak across generations.

We commiserate with his beloved family, his wife, children, and grandchildren, and pray that the Holy Spirit will comfort, strengthen, and abide with them at this critical time. May his memory be blessed forever. To God alone be all the glory for a life poured out in worship and truth. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord… that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.” Revelation 14:13,”.

Ron Kenoly, a towering figure in contemporary worship music, profoundly shaped global Christianity. His 1992 album Lift Him Up became a milestone, introducing dynamic, participatory worship styles that spread across the world. Timeless songs such as Ancient of Days and Jesus Is Alive continue to resound in churches throughout Africa, Europe, and beyond.

Over several decades, Kenoly produced numerous acclaimed albums—including Ron Kenoly, God Is Able, Welcome Home, and Sing Out with One Voice—celebrated for their fusion of gospel, contemporary Christian music, and praise choruses, often accompanied by large choirs and spirited congregational responses.

Beyond his musical legacy, Kenoly faithfully served as pastor and worship leader at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California, ministering for many years. He was also widely sought after as a speaker and worship facilitator at international conferences and crusades, particularly in Africa, where his ministry left a deep and enduring imprint.
